Ankunft in Belfast. Zum dritten Mal nach BLACK PRINCE 2007 und BLACK PRINCE 2008.

Es geht zum Frühstück. Der fertige Eistee schmeckt nicht frisch gebrüht, sondern instant Eistee. Ich bestelle mir noch ein Rührei aus frischen Eiern und ein Stück Schinken zum Reinschneiden. Leider bekommen wir immer so kleine Schalen: kein Platz zum Unterheben.



It's going to be breakfast. The finished iced tea does not taste freshly brewed but instant iced tea. I ordered another scrambled egg made from fresh eggs and a piece of ham to cut into. Unfortunately, we always get small bowls: no space to mix them in.

Wir notieren uns wieder die Hafenagenten. Wir gucken nach, was eine vergleichbare Tour an Bord gekostet hätte. Wir zahlen für unsere private Tour so ziemlich das gleiche. Wir müssen um 17:30 Uhr wieder an Bord sein.



We make a note of the port agents again. We check what a comparable tour on board would have cost. We pay the same for our private tour. We need to be back on board by 17:30 hrs.





It all looks very new. Completely different than back then. There used to be a free shuttle into town. Today we are supposed to pay 10 USD in cash. My USD wallet is in the cabin safe. Yes, I need GBP ashore.



Das sieht alles sehr neu aus. Ganz anders als damals. Früher gab es einen kostenlosen Shuttle in die Stadt. Heute sollen wir 10 USD in bar bezahlen. Meine USD-Geldbörse ist im Safe in der Kabine. Ich brauche ja GBP an Land.

Der Unterschied zwischen Blue Badge und Green Badge Fremdenführern in Großbritannien: Blue Badge sind wohl überregional und Green Badge sind überwiegend regional tätig. Wir wissen aber von unseren bisherigen Erfahrungen auf unseren Reisen durch Großbritannien, dass wir uns sehr gut verlassen konnten: z. B. Tess im Lake District vor der VENTURA 2018-Reise, Ingrid in Bath und Bristol bei unseren Reisen OCEAN PRINCESS 2015 und MARCO POLO 2019 und Ulla in London bei unseren Reisen OCEAN PRINCESS 2015, QUEEN MARY 2 2017 und QUEEN MARY 2 2022. So haben wir dieses Mal Kontakt mit Sabine Kirsch aufgenommen. Wir hatten bisher in Belfast eine Tour zu Giant Causeway und eine Taxi-Tour. Nur damals war der Tourismus in Belfast noch nicht so entwickelt wie heute und eine Taxi-Tour bedeutete nicht zwangszweise, dass man auch viel erfährt. Wir haben uns daher mit Sabine geeinigt: wir setzen alles auf Reset und starten von vorne. Das war eine sehr gute Idee, weil wir sehr viel inhaltlich lernen. Bevor es los geht: Sabine schlägt uns vor, dass wir ein Taxi nehmen: Es kostet als Fixpreis vom Hafen 15 GBP (2023) und wir werden dorthin gebracht, wo der "jüngere" Konflikt ausbrach: 1969. Wir erfahren, dass der Konflikt schon sehr viel älter ist: und zwar seit 1169 als die Engländer den östlichen Teils Irlands eroberten. Vielleicht ist es besser, dass Sabine unsere Fremdenführerin ist und alles erklärt: 1. Sie kann es auf Deutsch machen und dadurch gehen keine Informationen durch Übersetzungen verloren und 2. Sie ist als Deutsche "neutraler", weil sie keinen unmittelbaren Bezug zu den Akteuren im Konflikt hat. Sie stellt immer beide Seiten dar: die irisch-katholische und die british-protestantische. Sie erwähnt zwar ihren Partner und was in seiner Familie passiert ist, aber ich muss sagen, dass ich bis jetzt noch nicht raushören konnte, ob er ein Ire oder Nordire ist - sondern beispielsweise: es gab ein Opfer in der Familie - und so "neutral" dargestellt, dass man eigentlich am Schluss zur Erkenntnis kommt: Opfer sind Opfer: egal ob katholisch oder evangelisch - egal of irisch oder britisch - und die Familien sind "Opfer", die heute noch leiden. Wir beginnen unsere Führung im Teil, der von Katholiken dominiert wurde.



The difference between Blue Badge and Green Badge tourist guides in the UK: Blue Badge is arguably national, and Green Badge is predominantly regional. However, we know from our previous experiences on our trips through Great Britain that we could rely on each other very well: e.g., Tess in the Lake District before the VENTURA 2018 voyage, Ingrid in Bath and Bristol on our OCEAN PRINCESS 2015 and MARCO POLO 2019 voyages and Ulla in London on our OCEAN PRINCESS 2015, QUEEN MARY 2 2017 and QUEEN MARY 2 2022 voyages. So, this time, we contacted Sabine Kirsch. We've had a Giant Causeway and Taxi tour in Belfast so far. Only then was tourism in Belfast not as developed as today, and a taxi tour didn't necessarily mean you learned a lot. We have therefore reached an agreement with Sabine: we will reset everything and start from the beginning. That was an excellent idea because we learned a lot about content. Before we start: Sabine suggests that we take a taxi: it costs 15 GBP (2023) as a fixed price from the port, and we will be taken to where the "more recent" conflict started: 1969. We learn that the battle is already much older: since 1169 when the English conquered the eastern part of Ireland. Maybe it's better that Sabine is our guide and explains everything: 1. She can do it in German; therefore, no information is lost through translations, and 2. As a German, she is "more neutral" because she has no direct connection to the actors in the conflict. It always represents both sides: the Irish Catholic and the British Protestant. She does mention her partner and what happened in his family. However, I have to say that I have not yet been able to tell whether he is Irish or Northern Irish - but for example, there was a victim in the family - and so "neutral " shows that in the end, one concludes: Victims are victims: whether Catholic or Protestant - whether Irish or British - and the families are "victims" who are still suffering today. We started our tour in the part that Catholics dominated.

I lived in Berlin, Germany: we years before reunification and four years after reunification, even near Checkpoint Charlie. But there is another dimension here. At the moment, we are in the "neutral" zone. This is also noticeable in the "more neutral" motifs in the wall paintings. But we are still passing through a different world: it's no other - than when we moved from West to East Berlin, except that I don't have to exchange 25 marks.



Ich habe in Berlin gelebt: wir Jahre vor der Wende und vier Jahre nach der Wende. Sogar in der Nähe von Checkpoint Charlie. Aber das hat hier doch eine andere Dimension. Im Moment befinden wir uns in der "neutralen" Zone. Das macht sich auch die "neutraleren" Motive bei den Wandmalereien bemerkbar. Wir passieren aber dennoch eine andere Welt: es ist nicht anders - als damals der Übertritt von West- nach Ost-Berlin, nur dass ich keine 25 Mark tauschen muss.

Wir erreichen einen britisch-protestantischen Bezirk. Und sie schildert uns, was hier passiert ist. Wir stellen fest: die anderen sind keinen Deut besser gewesen. Und alles im Namen Gottes? Ich verstehe nicht mal den Konflikt zwischen Muslims, Juden und Christen - aber wer soll bitte den Konflikt zwischen zwei christlichen Kirchen verstehen. Ich mochte die Queen (nicht nur die Schiffe sondern auch Queen Elizabeth II.) und so spiegelt sich ihre lange Regentschaft und ihr Tod im vergangenen Jahr im Stadtbild dieses Stadtteiles wieder. Das bedeutet aber nicht, dass ich damit automatisch gegen die Iren bin. Ich bewundere einfach diese Frau, mit welcher Disziplin sie solange Königin war und ich würde mir wünschen, dass ich an mir selbst die gleiche Disziplin anlegen würde. Es ist nicht alles gut, was sie gemacht oder nicht gemacht hat. Aber sie ist auch nur ein Mensch.



We reach a British Protestant district. And she tells us what happened here. We find: that the others weren't any better. And all in the name of God? I don't even understand the conflict between Muslims, Jews, and Christians - but who is supposed to understand the conflict between two Christian churches? I liked the Queen (not only the ships but also Queen Elizabeth II), and so her long reign and her death last year are reflected in the cityscape of this part of town. But that doesn't mean that I'm automatically against the Irish. I admire this woman for what discipline she has been Queen for so long, and I wish I would apply the same discipline to myself. It could be better what she did or didn't do. But she's only human.

Hier in der Innenstadt war es "neutraler". Politisch gehört Nordirland zum Vereinigten Königreich und so sieht es hier genauso aus, wie in Bath, Bristol oder Southampton. Wir sind am Donegall Place. Hier lernen wir, dass sie aus Chichester kommen und maßgeblich an der Entwicklung Belfast beteiligt waren. Das ist bei Portsmouth. Wir sind wenige Tage zuvor durchgefahren und im Programm der DEUTSCHLAND stand das als Ausflugsort drin. Wir gucken uns das mal näher an, wenn wir mal wieder da unten sind.



Here in the city center, it was more "neutral". Politically, Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, and it is the same here as in Bath, Bristol, or Southampton. We're at Donegall Place. Here we learn that they are from Chichester and were instrumental in the development of Belfast. That's near Portsmouth. We drove through a few days before, and it was included in the program on DEUTSCHLAND as an excursion destination. We'll take a closer look when we get back down there.





We're going to Belfast City Hall. Here she tells us a part of the face of the city of Belfast with the help of the art on the windows.

Direkt angrenzend ist der TITANIC Memorial Garden. Die TITANIC wurde in Belfast erbaut und hier ist weltweit die einzige Gedenkstätte, die allen Opfern des TITANIC-Unglücks gewidmet ist und an dem auch alle Namen der Opfer an einem Ort zusammengefasst sind. Auch berühmte deutsche Namen wie die Astors aus Walldorf (Baden) - Hier habe ich jahrelang Volleyball gespielt und kenne die Verbindung zum Walldorf-Astoria Hotel.



Directly adjacent is the TITANIC Memorial Garden. Built in Belfast, TITANIC is the only memorial in the world dedicated to all the victims of the TITANIC disaster, with all the victims' names, gathered in one place. Also, famous German names like the Astors from Walldorf (Badenia) - I played volleyball here for years and know the connection to the Walldorf-Astoria Hotel.

It's time for a coffee break. Sabine suggests we visit the Daisies: a lovely shop. Even the marshmallows for the hot chocolate are homemade.

Wir laufen weiter durch die Stadt. Es fängt leider an zu regnen. Belfast bereitet sich auf die Belfast Pride vor. Deswegen ist hier viel mit den Regenbogenfahnen dekoriert. Berühmt ist Belfast für seine Gässchen, die zwischen den Häusern laufen und für die Hinterhöfe, die heute von der Gastronomie genutzt werden. Diese Bilder sollen einen Geschmack auf die Tour mit Sabine machen: nicht die Tour mit ihr ersetzen! Wir erleben Belfast so als sehr bunte und vielfältige Stadt. Der Nordirlandkonflikt spielt hier eine untergeordnete Rolle. Viel mehr zeigt man hier, dass es eine Stadt für alle ist - egal welcher Religion, welcher Herkunft usw..



We continue walking through the city. Unfortunately, it starts to rain. Belfast prepares for Belfast Pride. That's why a lot is decorated with rainbow flags here. Belfast is famous for its alleyways that run between the houses and for the backyards now used by restaurants. These pictures should give you a taste of the tour with Sabine: not replace the time with her! We experience Belfast as a very colorful and diverse city. The Northern Ireland conflict plays a minor role here. Much more you show here that it is a city for everyone - regardless of religion, origin, etc.

The bank headquarters moved near the town hall when the city was economically modernized. The luxury hotel The Merchant is located in a former bank headquarters. Since it's raining outside, it's an excellent opportunity to show us the lobby and the modern-day elegance of the hotel.



Als die Stadt wirtschaftlich modernisiert wurde, sind die Zentralen der Banken in die Nähe des Rathauses umgezogen. In einer der ehemaligen Bankzentralen ist heute das Luxushotel The Merchant. Da es draußen regnet, ist es eine gute Gelegenheit uns mal die Lobby und die heutige Eleganz des Hotels zu zeigen.

Wir gehen zum Lunch in die Bank Sq Brasserie. Sehr lecker und günstig. Wir laden immer die Fremdenführer ein: die werden uns schon nicht dahin führen, in dem sie nicht selbst gerne essen und es dort nicht schmeckt...

The rain is getting heavier. We refrain from visiting the TITANIC Quarter in this weather. Without further ado, Sabine worked out a dryer alternative program for us. It starts in the Queen's Quarter at Queen's University.

And at the end, it goes to the Ulster Museum to see the younger but also the much older history of Northern Ireland. I have worked twelve years at a chemical company H.C. Starck in Goslar, Germany, and now I finally see such an excellent period table.



Und am Ende geht es noch in das Ulster Museum, um hier nochmals die jüngere aber auch die sehr viel ältere Geschichte Nordirlands anzusehen. Ich habe zwölf Jahre für H.C. Starck in Goslar gearbeitet und nun sehe ich endlich mal so eine schöne Periodentafel.

Noch ein Snack am Schluss. Ich mag die internationalen Versionen der "Sausage Rolls" in der Schweiz, in Frankreich, in Belgien und in den Niederlanden: aber diese nordirischen sind nichts für mich. Irgendwie sind sie anders gewürzt... irgendwie schmeckt das wie Haggis... ich überlege mir, was alles darin verarbeitet sein könnte... Ich essen Haggis, wenn ich mich vorher mit mehreren Meditationsübungen geistig darauf eingestimmt habe. Aber so ganz unvorbereitet...



Another snack at the end. I like the international versions of the "Sausage Rolls" in Switzerland, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands: but these Northern Ireland ones are not for me. Somehow they are spiced differently... somehow it tastes like haggis... I think about what could be processed in it... I eat haggis when mentally attuned to it with several meditation exercises beforehand. But so unprepared...




The Harland and Wolff shipyard helped shape Belfast: also as the shipyard of the TITANIC. Sabine would have suggested again that we could walk around here a little more... then we could have "swum" back to the ship after our fins and gills grew. We want to come back to the TITANIC Quarter another time. A great tour comes to an end.



Die Schiffswerft Harland and Wolff hat Belfast mitgeprägt: auch als Werft der TITANIC. Sabine hätte zwar nochmals vorgeschlagen, dass wir hier nochmals ein wenig herumlaufen könnten... anschließend hätten wir zum Schiff zurück"schwimmen" können, nach uns Flossen und Kiemen angewachsen sind. Wir kommen gerne ein anderes mal auf das TITANIC Quarter zurück. Eine ganz tolle Tour findet seinen Abschluss.

After the meanwhile the initial temperature goes down to 8°C/46F, we now have to find another solution. We can't stay here, or we have to leave.



Nach dem Zwischenzeit die Ausgangstemperatur auf 8°C runtergeht, müssen wir jetzt eine andere Lösung finden. Hier können wir nicht bleiben oder wir müssen abreisen.



We're going to dinner first. Again we didn't get a table in Fahrenheit 555°, so we ate at Normandie Restaurant again. I'll scream right away... Macarena... I'll take a group picture with our servers from the previous evenings in a quiet minute. Only Clifford is missing.



Wir gehen erst mal zum Abendessen. Wieder haben wir keinen Tisch im Fahrenheit 555° bekommen, also essen wir wieder im Normandie Restaurant. Ich schreie gleich... Macarena... In einer ruhigen Minute mache ich mal ein Gruppenbild mit unseren Kellnern der vergangenen Abende. Nur Clifford fehlt.

Wir bekommen ein Angebot umzuziehen. Ich schlage aber vor, dass wir nicht sofort umziehen: es ist eine Suite. Sie nützt uns nur nichts, wenn das Thermostat hier auch nicht funktioniert. Ich stelle das Thermostat ein und bleibe eine halbe Stunde: es tut sich etwas. Und so kontrolliere ich am kommenden Morgen nochmals. Und dann sagen wir den Umzug zu. Zwischenzeitlich gucke ich mich hier um: sehr schön sechs USB-Ports. Hier gibt es auch die richtigen Kleiderbügel mit Haken. Sowie eine Aufstellung der QR-Codes mit hilfreichen Links. Irgendwie habe ich bei uns in der Kabine das nicht gesehen. So hätten wir beispielsweise die Club-Privilegien nachlesen können.



We get an offer to move. We should not move immediately, though: it's a suite. It's only valuable for us if the thermostat works here too. I set the thermostat and stay half an hour: something is happening. So I'll check again the following day. And then we agree to the move. In the meantime, I'll look around here: very nice six USB ports. There are also the right hangers with hooks. As well as a list of QR codes with helpful links. Somehow I didn't see that in our cabin. For example, we could have looked up the club privileges.

There is one point where I feel less comfortable with Carnival than with other companies: Yesterday, I received the CARNIVAL PRIDE pin and proudly talked about it on the Internet. Maybe it's because Carnival has become more "nationalistic" and "patriotic": Costa has done away with the European flag and replaced it with the tricolor. P&O has the Union Jack on the bow, and Carnival now has the "patriotic" colors of America - no - AIDA still has the kissable mouth! The bar is dedicated to patriotism. For the first time, I encountered public rejection with the posting. Others quickly rebuked the poster, and further comment was closed. But is that also a consequence of developments in the USA, Europe, and worldwide? What I also notice about Carnival: Certain slogans on baseball caps or T-shirts already show political preferences. I don't see that in the other companies. Carnival has also progressed on "law and order": drug dogs on board - bans on motto clothing. I still don't know what to think of it. The crew itself treats us very well. There are very few areas that I find a bit overbearing and feel I need to be more welcome. I'll keep watching.



In einem Punkt fühle ich mich bei Carnival unwohler als bei anderen Gesellschaften: ich hatte ja gestern die CARNIVAL PRIDE-Nadel bekommen und stolz darüber im Internet erzählt. Vielleicht liegt es ja daran, dass Carnival sich "nationalistischer" und "patriotischer" entwickelt hat: Costa hat die Europa-Flagge abgeschafft und die Tricolori dran. P&O hat den Union-Jack am Bug und Carnival jetzt die "patriotischen" Farben Amerikas - nein - AIDA hat immer noch den Kussmund! Die Bar die dem Patriotismus gewidmet ist. Zum ersten Mal bin ich mit dem Posting auf öffentliche Ablehnung gestoßen. Zwar wurde der Poster sehr schnell auch von anderen zurecht gewiesen und auch die weitere Kommentierung geschlossen. Aber ist das auch eine Folge der Entwicklung in den USA, in Europa, auf der ganzen Welt? Was mir auch bei Carnival auffällt: Gewisse Sprüche an Baseball-Mützen oder T-Shirts zeigen schon politische Präferenzen. Das fällt mir bei den anderen Gesellschaften nicht so auf. Auch hat Carnival ja beim Thema "Law and Order" vorangeschritten: Drogenhunde an Bord - Verbote von Motto-Kleidung. Ich weiss noch nicht, was ich davon halten soll. Die Crew selbst behandelt uns ganz toll. Es gibt nur sehr wenige Bereiche, die ich etwas überheblich finde und wo ich mich nicht so richtig willkommen fühle. Ich werde das mal weiter beobachten.
